About Me:
My Name is Chelsea Martin. I am a Psychology and Art Student at the University of Delaware, graduating in Spring 2018. My main areas of study are painting, drawing, graphic design, and illustration.
Artist Statement:
As I was going into AP art studio my senior year of high school, I was fascinated with artists like Jen Mann and Alyssa Monks. These artists worked with difficult textures like water and incorporated them into photorealistic portraits. So, for my portfolio concentration, I chose to focus on water. I felt that this would allow me to push myself to the limits in terms of mastering technique and detail in my art. I started out very literal - copying photographs I had taken of myself with water running down my face, and trying to see how well I could copy the photograph.
In terms of mastering technique, this helped a lot. By observing something as complex as water, I was better able to understand difficult forms and use tone and shading to correctly portray them in a piece. However, art is more than just being a photocopier. I felt my work was lacking concept and imagination. This led me to think of how I could incorporate a sense of imagination and narrative into my art, while still incorporating my water concentration. I began to focus on sea life, and found myself incorporating these creatures into human forms. I let my compositions show repetition and guide the viewer’s eye around the piece. I did this to reflect the nature of water itself. It’s always flowing in a constant and repeating cycle.
Then, I began to think less about water alone, and how nature itself has many cycles, which continue to flow regardless of any outside force. More recently, I have used this idea to spread out of my water concentration, into a more nature-based concentration in general.
As I have branched out into the freelance art world, I have found a niche for myself with watercolor illustrations that embody powerful but feminine girls. I still include strong themes of nature and repetition in this work. My work is often described as illustrative, similar to children's books.
